Abstract

155Gd and 57Fe Mössbauer measurements have been made on (Gd x R 1− x ) 1+ ϵ Fe 4B 4 alloys. The observed quadrupole interactions reflect the high anisotropy of the rare earth sublattice, as well as the different periodicities of the R and Fe+B sublattices. The easy axis of Gd magnetic moments was found to be determined by the sign of the second-order axial crystal-field coefficient of the substituted rare earth. Information was also obtained on the impurity GdFeB 4 phase. Hyperfine fields on Gd are negative for both compounds, and their values can be interpreted in terms of the empirical correlation with GdGd distances found by Dormann et al.
