Abstract

Samples of the stable Al 75Pd 15Fe 10 decagonal quasicrystal have been studied both in the as-cast state and after annealing. Structural properties were investigated using X-ray diffraction and 57Fe Mössbauer effect studies. X-ray patterns show that annealing improves the degree of order in the decagonal phase. Mössbauer effect spectra show a well resolved quadrupole doublet and are distinct from the complex spectra of most metastable decagonal alloys. Spectra are analysed in terms of a shell distribution of quadrupole splittings. Results are discussed in terms of Mössbauer effect studies of other quasicrystals and structural models for the decagonal phase.
