Abstract

Mossbauer and dc conductivity measurements were carried out on five samples. The first sample is the basalt rock and the second sample is the basalt glass without sulfur addition and the other three samples are basalt glass doped with different percentages of sulfur [5,10 and 15] mass% in addition. The basalt glasses were prepared by melting basalt rock starting from powder form in an electric furnace at [1550] °C in air, for half an hour, then quenched in air. The results show that the addition of sulfur to the basalt glass reduces the ionic states of iron oxide, which are present in basalt glasses, where the ferric ions completely disappeared at 10 mass% S content and the ferrous ions are the only iron site present. The relation between the electrical conductivity and activation energy was discussed and correlated with Mossbauer results.
