Abstract

The repartition of iron atoms between ferrous and ferric cations and the distribution of the ferric cations among octahedral and tetrahedral sites in silicate glasses have been studied by Mossbauer spectroscopy. The glasses were equilibrated at 1550°C in air and rapidly quenched.In alkaline silicate glasses, Na2O-SiO2-Fe2O3, all the ferric cations were found to be tetrahe-drally coordinated (“network-formers’). Additions of alumina and boron oxide did not affectthis result. In alkaline earth silicate glasses CaO-SiO2-Fe2O3, a large fraction (45 to 70 pct) of the ferric cations were found to be octahedrally coordinated (“network-modifiers”). This result invalidates current theories on the coordination of trivalent amphoteric cations in slags. The effect of the replacement of Fe2O3 by AI2O3 on this distribution has also been investigatedand was found to depend on composition. The results obtained in this study are compared with other results in the literature on the properties of slags and on the Mossbauer spectrometry of glasses and crystalline silicates, and are shown to be in satisfactory agreement.
