Abstract
This article analyses the poems of A.Nyka-Niliū-nas and pays special attention to the images or symbols which seem to explain the origin of the poet's creative impulses. Given the complexity of Niliūnas' poems, it is quite difficult to discuss its images or ideas from a single perspective. Nevertheless, the author of this article has tried to find approaches that offer insight into the essence of the poet's creative processes. Extensive use has been made of the theories of Gaston Bachelard. In exploring the poetics of space characteristic of Nyka-Niliūnas, special attention has been given to the images of house, room, door, window, doorstep and shell as well as to the context of these images. It seems that the poet interpreted these images quite differently and in a manner which reveals his unique creative insight within the context of the spiritual situation characteristic of many post-war Lithuanian emigres. Niliūnas' images can be considered as specific codes of the experience of solitude, despair, uncertainty as well as of the poet's desire for knowledge and timeless vitality.
