Abstract

(Abstracted from Nature 2017;548:347–351) Gene expression in the early stages of zygotic development is characterized by a lack of transcription and is dependent on the maternally deposited transcriptome. The competence of the mature oocyte, upon ovulation, to support fertilization and development is largely defined by the maternal transcriptome.
