Abstract

In the satellite networks (SATNETs), the random access (RA) schemes are studied to transmit the bursty traffic because the dedicated access (DA) schemes are inefficient to transmit bursty traffic due to overhead caused by control message. The slotted ALOHA (SA), used in the SATNETs, has low throughput owing to the collision between packets. Therefore, studies have been conducted to improve the throughput. The contention resolution diversity SA (CRDSA) and irregular repetition SA (IRSA) improve the throughput by using replica packets and successive interference cancellation (SIC). In particular, Reservation-CRDSA (R-CRDSA), the latest RA scheme, has higher throughput and greater stability than the CRDSA by using the slot reservation. However, in R-CRDSA, most slots are unused when the offered load is low because the satellite terminals (STs) can reserve only one slot in a frame. Furthermore, the ST that has a number of packets, needs many frames to transmit packets. To resolve this problem, we proposes a new slot reservation scheme called multiple slot reservation-CRDSA (MR-CRDSA). In our proposed scheme, the STs reserves a number of slots according to message size. Consequently, the STs can transmit many packet in a frame. In this paper, the algorithm to reserve multiple slots is proposed, which considers the fairness between STs as well as message size. To verify the performance of MR-CRDSA in the practical system, the performance is investigated through the simulation.
