Abstract

By the death of William Edward Schall in December last the Institute and Society has lost not only a Founder member of the Institute of Physics but a well-loved and generous counsellor. He was born on the 21 April 1888 and was educated at Dulwich College and University College, London, where he took an honours degree in physics. He joined his father in his x-ray business a year or two before the First World War and continued to be associated with the firm in its production of x-ray equipment of all kinds until the merger with Solus Electrical Company in 1946 when he became a Director of Solus-Schall, which then concentrated on industrial x-ray equipment and equipment for non-destructive testing.
