Abstract

To the Editor.— The April 21 issue ofThe Journalsuggests that Guy's Hospital is 163 years old. In fact, the hospital was founded by Thomas Guy, who purchased land for the purpose from St Thomas' Hospital, in 1721. Guy had initially made his fortune as a bookseller and publisher of Bibles and compounded it by his investment in the South Sea Company (the South Sea Bubble). His publishing business still exists under the name of Longmans, Green & Co. He died in 1724. Guy's Hospital first opened its doors to patients in 1726, and has therefore served the public for 263 years.2
