Abstract

The maximum power point tracking (MPPT) based on sliding mode extremum seeking control (SMESC) in wind energy conversion system was popular for high efficiency and simple control. However, inevitably steady-state oscillation limited the scope of application of the method. This paper presented an improved method to maximize power extracted from wind energy based on SMESC without steady-state oscillation. The proposed method replaced the binary sign function by continuous sigmoid function to decrease SMESC steady-state oscillation. The simulation results were compared with traditional SMESC in different wind speeds based on the small scale wind energy conversion system (SWECS), the oscillation amplitude of the proposed method is 50% or more smaller than that of the traditional SMESC.
