Abstract

This paper describes the research done on a prototype LAN-based desktop video conferencing system using MPEG-1 video. The system is based on a PC with a codec engine for video/audio compression, and a network controller for LAN network communications. It is clear that network jitter and packet loss are likely to occur in a packet-based LAN environment. The design issues, problems encountered, and possible solutions are described. We seperate the tasks of packet loss detection and error concealment, and assign them to communications subsystem and video decoder subsystem, respectively. The mechanisms for handling MPEG-1 video packetization and error concealment are implemented in the system to minimize the impact of network jitter and packet loss on the performance of the video conferencing.
