This study evaluate the efficacy and safety of Lactobacillus vaginal suppositories for preventing recurrent cystitis. METHODS: This was prospective phase 2 clinical trial. Subjects received vaginal suppositories containing the GAI 98322 strain of Lactobacillus crispatus every 2 days or 3 times a week for one year. The primary endpoint is recurrence of cystitis, and we analyzed the total number of recurrent cystitis episodes before and after the start of treatment with Lactobacillus vaginal suppositories. The secondary endpoints are adverse events. RESULTS: A total of 28 women were enrolled, and 22 completed the study. There was a 44% reduction in episode of cystitis for one year during the treatment of Lactobacillus vaginal suppositories (5.36 vs 2.36, p=0.00015). No treatment-related adverse events ware observed. CONCLUSIONS: The vaginal suppositories containing the GAI 98322 strain was effective and safe for preventing recurrent cystitis. Lager efficacy trials of this new preventive methods for recurrent cystitis are warranted.
