Abstract
INTRODUCTION AND OBJECTIVES: In the evaluation of patients with Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH), video cystoscopy is often helpful. However, instruments, equipment and machines for video cystoscopy are expensive and not readily available in some hospitals. Sohn et.al., in 2013, developed “Endockscope” which connects flexible endoscope but only with Apple iPhone 4S smartphone. Our study aims to demonstrate how to connect any Android, Apple or Windows smartphone with any cystoscope using commercially available universal “digiscoping” adapters during video cystoscopic evaluation of BPH patients. METHODS: Current models of Android smartphones with high resolution cameras may be connected to cystoscopes using either a screw-in type or a clip-on type of commercially available universal “digiscoping” adapters. Both adapters should be carefully fitted with shims to attach to telescopes during video cystoscopy. Careful alignment of the camera lens of smartphone with eyepiece of telescope is necessary. BPH images may be viewed from screen of smartphone and simultaneously viewed on any LCD monitor with an HDMI port for “wired screen mirroring” using an MHL (mini-usb to HDMI) cable. “Wireless screen mirroring” is possible using certain smartphone models when connected with compatible LCD monitor. Photographs of BPH images may be taken from cystoscope or from monitor. RESULTS: A vertical screw-in type “digiscoping” adapter was connected to an Android “camera-smartphone” Samsung Galaxy S4 zoom. A round clip-on type “digiscoping” adapter was connected to Android “smartphone-cameras” Samsung Galaxy S2 or Samsung Galaxy S3. When camera of smartphone was carefully aligned to telescope which was fitted with shims, BPH images viewed on screen of smartphone can be focused and zoomed in for desired size. BPH images viewed on screen of smartphone, as well as images simultaneously viewed with wired or wireless “screen mirroring” in LCD monitor, were noted to be acceptable for BPH evaluation in video cystoscopy. During “wireless screen mirroring,” there appears to be some delay in viewing image in LCD monitor compared to image from screen of smartphone. Photographs of endoscopic BPH images were taken for review and evaluation of BPH. CONCLUSIONS: Demonstrated is a method on how to connect any Android, Apple or Windows smartphone with any telescope using commercially available universal “digiscoping” adapters during video cystoscopy. BPH images viewed from screen of smartphone or simultaneously in LCD monitor, as well as photographs of cystoscopic images, were acceptable in the endoscopic evaluation of BPH.
