Abstract

intermediate risk PC. The oldest group, whose ages ranged from 70-99, had the highest percent of high risk PC. Of the patients 70þ years of age, 41.1% had a stage of >T2b, 41.1% had a Gleason Grade of 8-10, and 73.4% had a PSA >20. The mortality rates due to PC were determined, as shown in table. CONCLUSIONS: In our series of patients prostate cancer was not innocuous in the elderly. Of the patients aged 70þ, a total of 124 of 223 (55.6%) were in the D’Amico high risk category. The mortality rate from PC was as high as the mortality rate from other causes. The attitude that older men die with but not of PC may lead to a delay in the diagnosis. Work is underway to try and determine if this is in part responsible for the mortality rates. Further studies are needed to substantiate this, which could lead to a change in our paradigm.
