In the adult, obesity is associated with body inflammatory response, increases the risk of a variety of infectious diseases, including the APN. Therefore, we evaluate the impact of obesity in children with vesicoureteral reflux. METHODS January 1992 to December 2008, from the 186 patients were diagnosed vesicoureteral reflux, we reviewed 72 patients with primary vesicoureteral reflux who had febrile urinary tract infection in hospitalized more than once. Patients, Based on WHO criteria, depending on the age-specific standard weight, were classified as Standard weight group (weight for age<85%), Overweight group (85%≤weight for age<95%), Obese group (weight for age ≥95%). And we compared the grade of vesicoureteral reflux, renal scars, surgery, degree of inflammation in febrile urinary tract infection according to BMI. RESULTS Of 72 patients, there were 41 in standard weight group, 16 in overweight group and 15 in obese group. There was no association with obesity and hydronephrosis, grade of reflux, surgery (p=0.563, 0.947, 0.313, respectively). However in overweight and obese group, VUR was diagnosed at a young age (p=0.05), the degrees of renal scars were more severe (p=0.006) and serum WBC count, CRP, ESR level was significantly higher (p<0.001, <0.001, <0.001, respectively). CONCLUSIONS In patients with vesicoureteral reflux, obesity have an effect in febrile urinary tract infection, renal scars and inflammatory reaction. Therefore, in obese patients, we should follow up more carefully and treat more aggrressively. Table 1. Characteristics of the patients with VUR according to obesity.
