Approved by the Extremadura University Ethical Commission. AllocationExtremadura University School of Medicine. ParticipantsInclusion criteria: voluntary women university student from 18 to 20 years of age, after having signed an informed consent. Exclusion criteria: medical contraindication for acupuncture application and/or presence of feeding disturbances. Forty cases were included. InterventionsTen daily sessions of 5 min with indirect moxibustion (using Arthemisa) in Ren 8 acupoint. MeasurementsVariables: age, appetite and anxiety levels; assessed using a virtual analogic scale (VAS), body weight was measured using a pondered digital weightmachine B1010®, waist/hip index was measured using a Siluet® body-tape. Participants did not know the purpose of the used techniques. A random distribution into two groups was done: an intervention group (moxa) and a control group. Measurements were done at the beginning (pretext. Time zero) and at the end (post-test, 11th day). ResultsThe analyzing method used was SPSS 15.00. Average age: 20 years. Intervention group showed: an appetite improvement, an anxiety-level diminishing, as well as an average body-weight and waist/hip index diminishing; while control group showed: an appetite diminishing, an increase of anxiety levels, as well as a waist/hip index and average body-weight diminishing. Student's t-test for previous relations: P=.080 (at the limit of significance) for appetite; P=.258 (no significant) for anxiety; P=.187 (no significant) for body-weight, and P=.086 (at limit of significance-level) for waist/hip index. ConclusionsRen 8 moxa intervention represents an eventual option to investigate changes in the body-weight of young women suffering from anorexia.
