Abstract

How believable are chemical producers' assertions that they have reduced emissions to the air, land, and water? Many people still do not trust the chemical industry and have little time to track the industry's pollution abatement efforts. To address this shortcoming, chemical companies, government agencies, and, in some cases, community groups have called in third-party verifiers to assure people that the chemical industry and chemical users are indeed cleaning up their collective act. Chemical industry leaders readily accept the notion that third-party verifiers should review company environmental standards. Sure, we'd allow third-party verification, says DuPont President and Chief Executive Officer John A. Krol. We shouldn't be embarrassed'' to have outsiders look in on company operations, he says.
