Abstract

This practice note focuses on the new policing paradigm, community-oriented policing. I discuss why the past academic subject of “police-community relations” and the more contemporary “police and society” should be updated in criminal justice programs, explain why it is an important area of study and provide a current assessment of community-oriented policing as an academic course. I also describe an approach for developing and teaching a course in community-oriented policing. Included are an assessment of course content; potential references including books, videos and Internet sites; and active learning strategies.
