Abstract
Population size and structure are key variables of social behavior in any country. In this article a new annual series of Spain’s total population is produced, with revised data for 1991-2018. Natural movement data arecompleted, which allows for the elaboration of new vital records for the 1940-1974 period, previously defective, and the annual migration balances for over 140 years are presented. The essay describes the method and sources used and analyses the most significant changes. The Italian case is introduced as a contrasting example in order to evaluate the frequency and intensity of Spain’s migratory movements with the outside.
