Abstract

The main purpose of this study was to elaborate on the genres used in English newspapers published in Iran as an EFL context and USA as an ESL context. Benefiting from analytical framework proposed by Swales (2004) [19], the researchers came to the conclusion that due to the purposes each newspaper fulfills, they employ different types of moves in their news reports and editorials. That is to say, the American newspaper, New York Times, had all six moves proposed in the framework, while the Iranian counterpart, Tehran Times, skipped some moves and did not take some of them into account. The Iranian newspaper tries to be as informative as possible while the American one is argumentative as well as informative. These noticeable differences can assist instructors and students dealing with translation and journalistic writing.
