Abstract

This paper presents a movement of vortices which generate in a flow field of a supersonic impinging jet. The jet is exhausted from a convergent nozzle at nozzle pressure ratio 3.0 and impinges on a flat plate perpendicularly. Using the shadowgraph method, the flow field is visualized and the changes of the jet structure caused by the motion of vortices are examined. In addition, the frequency of such oscillation is measured using schlieren system and the flow field is numerically simulated. Symmetric TVD scheme is applied to solve three dimensional Euler equations. As a results, the free jet under this condition are found to oscillate helically and it is shown that this oscillation mode is related to the motion of vortices moving around the jet and separation bubble which is generated between the plate shock and the plate.
