Abstract

The theory of Cholodny and Went (20) attributes the tropic curvatures of growing plants to an unequal distribution of auxin caused by lateral movement of auxin in stimulated organs. The work of Dolk (3) with tips and isolated sections of coleoptiles of Avena sativa and Zea mnays provided strong support for this theory as applied to geotropism. Subsequently, other workers found an unequal distribution of auxin resulting from geotropic stimulation of organs other than coleoptiles. (See reviews by Went and Thimann (20) and Anker (1).)
