Abstract

The mouthpart and buccal cavity sensilla are described after using scanning electron microscopy on adults of the eastern and western strain of the alfalfa weevil, Hypera postica (Gyllenhal), and the Egyptian alfalfa weevil, H. brunneipennis (Boheman). Uniporous sensilla basiconica occur on the apex of the terminal segment of the palpi but do not differ consistently among the three weevils. The antennae and tarsal setae were also compared but showed no differences. However, the shape and dimensions of the mandibles may be used to differentiate among the three weevils; those of the eastern strain and H. brunneipennis are the least alike and the western strain is intermediate.
