Abstract
Abstract This chapter explores the concept of sustainable tourism in relation to mountainous areas. It discusses: (i) the negative impacts of tourism (especially skiing and ski resorts) on the environment in the mountains; (ii) the 3 Cs of sustainable mountain tourism (viz., conflict, compatibility and carrying capacity); (iii) the negative sociocultural impacts of tourism in mountain areas; (iv) the need for partnership between tourism and agriculture in upland areas; (v) sustainable tourism's role in sustaining mountain communities; and (vi) the debate over wilderness tourism as irresponsible tourism. The case of the Hohe Tauern National Park in Austria is presented as an example of a partnership.
