Abstract

A preliminary study to predict emissions and fuel consumption of Australian motor vehicles was undertaken. Twenty-eight vehicles were tested on a dynamometer to obtain the modal emission rates of carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, hydrocarbons and nitrogen oxides. Regression functions of speed and acceleration were fitted to the data and found to be accurate to within about 10% for the group of vehicles. Emissions and fuel consumption predictions were then made for a range of driving pattern data measured in Sydney traffic. The results gave a strong correlation of carbon monoxide, hydrocarbons and fuel consumption with average speed. Nitrogen oxides were almost independent of average speed and showed more scatter.
