Abstract

Classic concepts of a stringent somatotopic organization of the primary motor cortex have been challenged by a model describing strongly overlapping cortical representation areas of muscles that provide a wide range of complex movements despite focal stimulation. In this context and within the framework of the “degrees of freedom” problem, it is unclear i) how dynamic the hand-knob is in encoding finger-movements and ii) if electromyography (EMG) or kinematics are better suited as a read-out method.
