Abstract

ABSTRACTFan attendance at sporting events is an important contributor to club finances and to player motivation. Although attendance has experienced a downturn in professional sports around the world, Mexican football fans continue to fill their stadiums. This study sought to understand the motivations of these fans to attend live events. A 16-item scale was distributed online, and 877 responses were collected from fans of Liga MX teams. The findings show that what motivates Mexican football fans to attend live matches is the opportunity for socialization, entertainment and escape from routine, the team performance, connection to the team, and, lastly, the characteristics of the sportscape.
