Abstract
The purpose of this systematic review was to determine the effects of MI in promoting smoking cessation. Randomised controlled trials comparing MI counselling sessions with brief advice or usual care in adult smokers (excluding adolescents and pregnant women), published up to April 2009, were identified from the Cochrane Tobacco Addiction Group Specialised Register. Fourteen studies involving over 10,000 smokers were reviewed. The primary outcome measure was smoking abstinence at six months.
