Abstract
Motivation represents, in most cases, a highly automated potential to act. The actual behavior that is motivated acts and functions, neural network wise, as an expression of this potential. Potential motivation can be defined as the maximum effort an individual would be willing to exert to satisfy a motive. It is distinguished from motivation intensity, which refers to the amount of effort people actually expend to reach a goal or satisfy a motive. This difference is critical because humans only expend the effort necessary to obtain the outcome we want. They rarely expend effort cavalierly. As a result of situational variables, the expenditure of effort in obtaining the same goal can vary considerably.
