Abstract

A new method of predicting motions of a semisubmersible drilling platform in head seas is presented. A strip method is appropriately employed for the estimation of the hydrodynamic forces and moments on each member of the immersed structure oscillating in head seas. All hydrodynamic interactions among the immersed component members are assumed to be negligible. Predicted motions for a catamaran-type semisubmersible drilling platform in head seas are compared with corresponding results of scale-model tests. Conclusions are drawn from this comparison and recommendations for future study are given.
