Abstract

In teaching music appreciation at virtually any age level, it is important to stress awareness of how composers use the various musical elements to create form or structure and musical expression. Such awareness is not only crucial to comprehension of what composers do, it is also crucial to deeper enjoyment and appreciation, removing the listener from a world of unrelated tonal configurations, so to speak, and placing him instead into a world of perceivable and logical relationships. This transition permits the mental functions of memory, immediate awareness, and anticipation to interact.
