Abstract

The configuration and characteristics of a surface acoustic wave (SAW) delay line oscillator for use as an accelerometer using a ceramic plate are described. The static strain sensitivity of the delay line oscillator using a Pb(Zr·Ti)O3-based piezoelectric ceramic plate is measured. The SAW accelerometer is a strain-sensitive SAW delay line oscillator, in which the oscillation frequency varies with bending stress imparted to the ceramic plate by four loading pins on a brass block that is subjected to force. The accelerometer is mounted on a rotating disk and its oscillation frequency deviation is measured against the number of rotations and the radial acceleration of the disk. The strain sensitivity in the form of the change of oscillation frequency is satisfactory for accelerometer performance.
