Abstract

The Healthcare Commission has released a report on the UK maternity services having surveyed a massive 26?000 women about their experiences (Healthcare Commission, 2007). Some very positive aspects have been noted so let's look at those first: 90% of women said they were given the phone number of a midwife so they could be in contact at any time, and 91% of women could see a health professional about their pregnancy as early as they wanted to. In labour, most (92%) said they received their choice of pain relief and 82% were spoken to in a way they could understand. So it's good to know that midwives are pretty good communicators. Even postnatally, 76% of women said they saw a midwife whenever they wanted and 88% had a postnatal check-up within four to six weeks following the birth. So some very positive results.
