Abstract

Thirty-five species of mosses are newly reported for Montana, North Dakota, the Black Hills of South Dakota and Wyoming, Nebraska, and Kansas. Further records representing significant range extensions are also included. New or notable state records have accumulated based on past field work in Nebraska, Kansas and the Black Hills of South Dakota and Wyoming, and on recently completed field work in North Dakota and eastern Montana. The preliminary field work on the mosses of the Great Plains has now been completed for the region outlined by Churchill (1976). All collections cited are at Mo unless noted otherwise; representative duplicates of the author's collections have been or will be distributed to other herbaria (including ALTA, B, CANM, COLO, G, H, HIRO, HSC, MEXU, MICH, NFLD, and NY) by MO. Collection numbers are those of the author except where otherwise stated. Nomenclature generally follows Crum et al. (1973) except for the Grimmiaceae (Churchill 1981) and the Mniaceae (Koponen 1968). Names of species that represent new state records are preceded by an asterisk (*).
