Abstract

Mosquitoes are recognised as one of the most deadly animals in the world due to the vector-borne diseases they spread. Sandra Grieve provides an overview of the key mosquito-borne diseases the practice nurse needs to know about Vector-borne diseases account for over 17% of all infectious diseases, causing thousands of deaths globally every year. Many vectors are bloodsucking insects requiring a blood meal to reproduce. Knowledge of epidemiology, the diseases and associated risks are important for practice nurses advising travellers visiting areas affected by these diseases. This article will focus on mosquito-borne diseases. The list is not exhaustive, and others should be taken into account during the pre-travel consultation.
