Abstract
Annually, approximately 37% of emergency ambulance calls in Helsinki emergency medical services (EMS) concluded in a nontransport decision. According to clinical experience, nontransport decisions have been estimated to be safe and also economically beneficial. However, mortality of nontransported patients after call has not been studied. The Helsinki Dispatching Center serves the capital city of Helsinki (population 588,500). The dispatching center prioritizes emergency medical calls into four urgency categories from A to D. In this study, we analyzed category A, B, and C calls concluded with a nontransport decision. EMS system provided by the Rescue Department consists of eight Basic Life Support ambulances, which are manned by emergency medical technicians (EMTs), three Advanced Life Support ambulances manned with paramedics, and one medical supervisor unit. One physician-staffed mobile intensive care unit serves on a 24/7 basis.
