Abstract

Three animal systemic insecticides were given to sheep to determine their effectiveness in reducing larvae (mainly 1st instar) of the sheep bot fly, Oestrus avis L. Nasal sprays of 3% dichlorvos at 2.3 mg per kg administered from pressurized plastic bottles fitted with metered-dose nozzles reduced the numbers of larvae 90%. Oral drenches of fenthion at 30 mg per kg completely eliminated larvae. The same rate of fenthion in feed mixtures and as a pour-on was less effective than oral drenches. Fenthion sprays did not provide any measure of control, probably because of their failure to wet the skin of sheep. Bay 9017 (O, O-diethyl O-[4-(methylthio)-3,5-xylyl] phosphorothioate) was nearly as effective as fenthion.
