Abstract

1. In the seeds of Annona squamosa the very large endosperm is ruminate, and the tiny embryo located near the hilum develops slowly. Contrary to the situation reported in many other dicotyledons, the enlargement of the first leaf is delayed until after the seedling has attained a height of about 8 cm. 2. The embryo possesses either a very short or no period of dormancy. This species provides one of the few known exceptions to the observation that large seeds germinate rapidly; it takes 1-3 months to germinate. It is postulated that an undifferentiated embryo is a primitive feature. 3. It is suggested that the degree of specialization of the embryo is of more importance in the determination of phylogenetic tendencies than the size of the seed.
