Abstract

A double hydrophilic block copolymer poly(ethylene glycol)-b-poly(sodium 4-styrenesulfonate) (PEG-b-PSSS) was synthesized and characterized by 1H NMR, FTIR, and elemental analysis. The morphology control of barium sulfate by this copolymer in aqueous solution was investigated. In the presence of PEG-b-PSSS with varying experimental parameters (polymer concentration, pH of solution, aging time and [Ba2+]/[] ratio), barium sulfate particles with distinct morphologies were obtained. They were characterized with scanning electron microscopy (SEM), x-ray diffraction (XRD) and laser particle sizer. The influences of experimental parameters on the formation of barium sulfate particles were discussed.
