Abstract

CePO4:Tb3+ nanorods with hexagonal structures were successfully synthesised by hydrothermal method. According to the results of X-ray diffractions (XRD), all diffraction peaks were well indexed corresponding to the hexagonal phase of CePO4 host (JCPDS 34-1380). Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscopy (FE-SEM) device was used for studying the morphology of prepared samples. In this study, there were different PO4/Ce molar ratios used to synthesise CePO4:Tb3+ nanorods. Nanorod formation had the tendency towards bundle-like shape with the increasing length occurring as the PO4/Ce molar ratio reached the range from 100 to 140. Energy dispersive X-ray (EDX) provided the sample composition information. Photoluminescence (PL) results clearly exhibited the strongest green emission peak at ~543 nm, under 275 nm excitation. The highest luminescent intensity was obtained in the sample prepared by 5% Tb3+ doped molar concentration and PO4/Ce molar ratio at 140. The average lifetimes of samples synthesised by Tb3+ doped molar concentration at 1, 3, 5% relatively at 543 nm emission under 275 nm excitation were respectively at 0.136, 1.046, 2.701 ms.
