Abstract

Abstract A detailed account of vegetative and reproductive features of Dasyphila preissii Sonder from southern Australia is presented as a basis for further studies on the morphology and relationships of taxa placed in the tribe Dasyphileae. Muellerena wattsii (Harvey) Schmitz is recognized as morphologically similar to Dasyphila preissii in several features and, in particular, in sequence of branch initiation and in having a carposporophyte in which the auxiliary cell becomes linked, by means of a secondary pit-connection, to the axial cell upon which the original fertile branch was borne. These features indicate that Muellerena wattsii was probably correctly placed in the Dasyphileae.
