Abstract

A multi-beam echo-sounder (Sea-Beam) and continuous seismic profiling in the Liguro—Provençal Basin were used to determine the distribution and morphology of the salt domes in this region. Several areas were mapped on the scale of 1 25,000 having 10 m-distant contour lines. An analysis of the Sea-Beam and seismic profile data has enabled a better understanding of the hypotheses concerning the phenomenon of halokinesis: i.e., the influence of the sedimentary overload and the influence of tectonic activities in the area. It will be demonstrated that the sediment cover in the delta regions of the Rhône and Var Rivers has a negative influence on halokinesis. In these areas no piercement structures can be seen. Deep-level tectonic activity and the faulting of the area have a primary role in the halokinesis observed in the studied zones. Observed diapiric features are characteristic of the underlying layer, and can be used as guides for geodynamic study of the basin.
