The village of Mecayapan, Ver., is one of a dozen or so where this dialect is spoken, and is the municipio of the area where the forms described in this paper are heard. Other Nahuat speaking municipios in the southern part of the state of Veracruz are: San Andr6s Tuxtla, Cosoleacaque, Oteapan, Jaltipan. The 19401 census figures place the number of Nahuat speaking residents in the state of Veracruz at 76,765. No figures are available for the speakers of the Isthmus dialect alone.
