Abstract

The stability of the shape of a spherical particle growing from an undercooled binary alloy melt is studied by a method of Mullins and Sekerka. These results are then compared with the earlier studies on the stability of planar and cylindrical interfaces, and it is shown that all these results can be generalized to one equation which contains appropriate dimensionless parameters. The application of our results to calculate stable tip dimensions of dendrites growing from a binary alloy melt is described.
