Abstract

Seeds of three species of Gentianaceae were sterile germinated in pot culture and inoculated with three species of Glomus and one Glomus/Acaulospora mix. Mycorrhizae were readily formed. Several differences between normal VA mycorrhizae and those in gentians were observed. In outer cortical cells large loops of hyphae were produced, few intercellular hyphae were present, and spread of the fungal colonization resulted primarily from the external hyphae. Gentian mycorrhizae differed in the size and development of looped hyphae as well as in the sizes and shapes of arbuscules. These differences are probably under the control of the fungus.
