Abstract

The reaction behavior of AlN powder in the temperature range of 1273–1773 K in wet air for 15 h was investigated using thermogravimetric (TG) analysis. Raman spectra, FT-IR, XRD and TEM were used to investigate the morphological development. The results showed that the reaction behavior of AlN powder in wet air is strongly temperature dependent. At low temperature between 1273 and 1473 K, oxidation is the predominant reaction. Water enhances the reaction and changes the microstructure of the oxide product. Above 1473 K, the reaction rate increases quickly initially and then progressively decreases with continued reaction time. By FTIR analysis, the volatile product was determined to be Al(OH)3, which is formed by the reaction of Al2O3 and H2O in this temperature range.
