Abstract

The Na2O-SiO2 system was used as an experimental model for a study of immiscibility which occurs metastably from approximately 0 to 20 mol % soda in this system. The time and temperature of heat treatment of glass samples was varied in order to observe the progressive development of metastable and unstable types of morphologies by electron microscopic techniques. The development of the morphologies is explained on the basis of hypothetical free-energy curves.
