Abstract
Summary Secondary cultures of human amnion cells developed characteristic morpho-logical changes when re-fed with media containing yeast extract. When cultures so treated were inoculated with vaccinia virus, the usual cytopathic effect failed to develop although isolated microplaques were occasionally observed after prolonged incubation. Some studies were made of the nature of the active substance and its mode of action. We wish to thank the Research Grants Committee of the United Manchester Hospitals for supporting this project.
