Abstract

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of morphological boundaries and the voicing characteristics of following consonants on the duration of stressed vowels produced by profoundly hearing impaired adults. Results indicate that profoundly hearing impaired adults do not vary the duration of stressed vowels in accordance with the durational recoding observed in normal speech. The findings are discussed relative to the nature of articulatory programming of profoundly hearing impaired speakers and the perceptual consequences of their speech timing errors.
