Abstract

Unimodal olfactory neurones in the deutocerebrum ofPeriplaneta americana were stained with cobalt and their reaction spectra were examined. Functionally these cells are type Ib. These neurones are excited by food odours and show no resonse to cockroach odours. It is not possible to subdivide this cell group into several reaction types. The cell somata lie in a dorsolateral region of the ipsilateral lobe of the deutocerebrum. Each cell innervates only one glomerulus and all cells have a common projection area. Some of these neurones make contact with the corpora pedunculata via the tractus olfactorio-globularis. Furthermore, a local interneurone is described morphologically and its reaction spectrum is examined.
